A natural, untrained talent, this gifted youngster was placed center stage to star in "American Gothic" (CBS), one of the most highly touted series of the 1995-96 TV season. With a toughness and sensitivity that placed him somewhere between Brad Renfro ("The Client"; "The Cure") and Elijah Wood on the kid star spectrum, the twelve-year-old Black commanded the small screen as a suddenly orphaned North Carolina youngster who finds himself thrust into a world of supernatural intrigue. Black had only one prior professional acting credit as part of a "white trash" family that bedeviled Elijah Wood in "The War" (1994), co-starring Kevin Costner. As for the young performer's work on "American Gothic", New York Post critic Michelle Greppi raved: "... But the star is Black, who has a huge heart and huge eyes and cries huge tears. Even the kid's freckles can act." He had his first significant leading role in features in 1996's "Sling Blade".
